Skin CareQ: What procedure you most often perform? A: Botox Cosmetic injections are for active facial lines, particularly those lines found above the nose, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Restylane is for filling passive lines such as the nasolabial folds [the lines that extend from the nose down to the corner of the mouth.] Restylane is also ideal for giving fuller lips. Q: What are the advantages of providing this service in clients’ homes? A: Privacy, time, and convenience. Our clients are busy business executives, both men and women. This protects patient confidentiality while offering ultimate convenience. Tom Francis, MD, Home Visits Aesthetics Skin Care Plastic Surgery Q: Why do you think that the number of people getting plastic surgery is on the rise? A: The ability to use noninvasive procedures is here now. Liposuction is a very safe office procedure, and that is the difference between how it was years ago and now. There’s no bleeding. There are no trips to the hospital for the nip and tuck. Laser technology has improved in the last decade. The tumescent technique invented by Dr. Jeffrey Klein is used in every facet of all cosmetic surgery. It’s amazing, safe, and effective with use of local anesthesia. The tumescent technique is ubiquitous, unanimous, and universally used by colleagues in dermatology, dentistry, and plastic surgery. Q: What should people look for or ask when researching cosmetic surgeons? A: I am passionate about liposuction, and most of my clients come to me by referral. Patients should determine how a doctor regards his practice. Wordof- mouth is still the best method to find credentialed surgeons, and I think potential patients should inquire about the amount of surgeries performed monthly by surgeons [whom they may choose]. Peter Normann, MD, Normann Medical Group Cosmetic Dentistry Q: What are the best ways to straighten crooked, gapped, or overlapped teeth? A: One of the most sought-after and [effective] esthetic procedures that people are undergoing today is the process of fixing one’s smile. Once thought of as reserved for the jet-set Hollywood types, cosmetic dentistry is exploding in popularity now because of several factors. First of all, the outcomes are so much more durable and realistic than was ever possible. In the hands of a properly trained cosmetic dentist, getting the smile that nature denied you is much quicker, more comfortable, and more beautiful than people ever realized. Secondly, people are now aware of what is possible more than ever. Cosmetic dentistry is now in the forefront of people’s awareness because of their dentists, media discussion, and television attention Finally, current research is showing with great clarity the connection between oral health and overall body health. Many people come to my office wanting a more attractive smile, not realizing that their unhealthy teeth were leading to all sorts of other problems. Tooth and gum disease have now been closely and causatively linked to conditions like heart disease, strokes, and even migraines. So, people are excited that the idea of getting their smile made over is not just a matter of vanity, but can have huge health benefits as well. Q: What are veneers, and on what types of teeth should they be used? What are the different types of veneers, and what are the differences? A: Veneers are a remaking and resurfacing of the visible areas of someone’s teeth with porcelain. The porcelain is bonded to the teeth as if it were one’s own enamel, and can be used to solve a wide range of issues people have with the appearance and health of their teeth. Since the porcelain is custom-created under microscopes in a laboratory at the dentist’s direction, the dentist and patient have artistic license to pick the color, shape, angulation, and size of the teeth. A lifetime of avoiding photographs, altering one’s smile, or awkwardness in social settings can be eliminated almost immediately. I’ve seen countless patients have a makeover not only of their smile, but also of their self-confidence and outlook by finally getting the smile they’ve always wanted. Porcelain veneers in the hands of a specially trained dentist can most certainly change lives. As time goes on, our technology improves as well. The process is much more delicate and conservative to the teeth than before. In a few select cases, very little has to be done to the natural teeth at all. The only thing that is required to get your smile makeover and keep it intact long-term is to have a healthy setting to place them in. If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, you may need a cleaning or a few cavities addressed as a first step. You must maintain good hygiene afterward, as you would if you were trying to keep any of your teeth healthy, and you shouldn’t be in the habit of using your teeth as tools. Abnormal uses can break natural teeth and veneered teeth. Overall, the veneering process has come a long way toward being the ultimate answer for people to get the attractive and healthy smile of their dreams, in an exciting and rapid way. Richard Holley, DDS, The Smile Institute Q: What is the most common procedure now for whitening teeth? A: With the past shows like Extreme Makeover, the most common procedures are certainly cosmetic in nature, and they appear to vary somewhat by geographical region. In many parts of the country, bleaching, whether by takehome method or in-office, bleaching procedures are very popular. In other parts of the country, the smile makeover provided by porcelain enhancements such as veneering would be one of the most common procedures. Q: What should people look for or ask when they are looking for a cosmetic dentist? A: It is important to identify the dentist’s credentials for providing cosmetic services. One of the resources for that is the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry [aacd.com], which is the largest international organization for educating dentists about cosmetic dental services or procedures. Accredited or accredited fellows of this organization stand out. Also, potential patients should ask if they could speak to other patients who have had the same treatments they desire, done by that dentist. Lastly, people should interview at least two highly credentialed prospective dentists and then go with their gut instinct, which is like our second brain. Q: What do you see in the future of cosmetic dentistry? A: This certainly will involve digital technology and lasers. With digital, the use of CAD-CAM [computer-assisted] technology, where a dentist will scan or photograph a prepared tooth and download it to a computer, and then a milling machine will fabricate the restoration for the dentist who can place it in or on the tooth the same day. The old [method involves waiting] two to three weeks while wearing a temporary cover. Lasers will be used more frequently to manipulate or cut hard tissue [bone, teeth] or soft tissue [gums]. These lasers will be used to provide cosmetic-type procedures, or simply to help eliminate diseased tissue. The benefit of the laser is much quicker healing times. Chiropractic TreatmentQ: Chiropractic treatment has traditionally been widely viewed as a therapy for injuries, especially back injuries. How can it be employed as a preventive maintenance strategy? A: It is a good idea for everyone to include chiropractic care in a preventive maintenance health plan. Chiropractic contributes to one’s overall health by restoring proper alignment and motion to the spine and other joints in the body. Several stresses are placed on our bodies daily, such as constant poor or sustained postures, repetitive motions, and acute traumas. Regular chiropractic care allows the body to function at its optimal level, balanced and free of interference. Chiropractic also treats soft tissues and muscles, providing relief from tension, pain, and stress that can accumulate in these areas. By including chiropractic care in your preventive health plan, you can help prevent these daily stresses from manifesting as pain or other illness in your body, thus achieving optimal health and a better quality of life. Q: What age ranges benefit the most from chiropractic services? What are recommended regimens for both sexes and ages, including children? A: Chiropractic treatment can be beneficial for people of all ages. Treatment plans are generally tailored to meet the individual’s specific needs and lifestyle. While the majority of patients seek out chiropractic care for pain relief and treatment of acute injuries, a growing number of people are realizing the benefits of regular wellness care. I recommend that children be examined annually to ensure proper spinal alignment and motion as they grow and become more active. More frequent visits may be necessary to treat certain musculoskeletal problems or injuries. Adult treatment plans vary, depending on the individual’s health history and lifestyle. Misalignments or joint dysfunction in the spine typically resolve within one to twelve treatments, depending on the cause of injury and period of time the problem has been present. Patients who are interested in chiropractic for wellness and prevention will benefit from treatment every four to eight weeks. This plan helps to keep the body in balance and functioning at its optimum level. Ben Henning, D.C., Tatum Crossing Chiropractic The Mind and Body Side...
DrummingQ: What can you tell our readers about the health benefits of drumming? A: Drumming is a technique that has led to elimination of stress, corporate burnout, therapy with Alzheimer patients and their families, improvements in the immune system. Research on this subject can be viewed at remo.com or healthyrhythms.com. Q: Is drumming a useful activity for both sexes? What age range is most receptive to this experience? A: Unisex in practice, drumming can be done by individuals and groups, families, hospitals, corporations, children, and adults. Most sessions are done with both sexes. Drumming opens up the creative side of everyone; rhythm takes over. Sue Kilp, Anasazi Healing Meditation Q: We hear a lot about meditation and its benefits. What are your thoughts on the importance of taking time to meditate? A: It is extremely important to be the best people we can be. People define that differently for themselves. To me, meditation helps quiet the noise, and negative thoughts, energy, and environment around you, and focus solely on the thoughts and energies that will help you become a better person. Q: To what degree do body posture, place, and environment affect the meditative atmosphere? A: Body posture is extremely important as it opens you up to this moment, space, and place, and reflects your intent to fully engage your energy. The home environment gives you the opportunity to surround yourself with pictures, photos, important objects from childhood. Keith Jones, Total Being The Fitness Side...
Boot Camp TrainingQ: How does the boot camp style of training help people stick with the fitness program? A: Cave Creek Adventure Boot Camp offers a wide range of training activities in order to ensure lasting results. Campers can expect to participate in a variety of different exercises such as calisthenics, short-distance running, weight training, hiking, Pilates, and much more. The program is designed to increase aerobic output while simultaneously decreasing body fat and increasing muscle tone. This is accomplished in a supportive environment that fosters and promotes individual results in a team-oriented atmosphere. The program is designed to cater to every ability level, but a natural camaraderie occurs, which enhances sustained motivation. Q: Is it equally appealing to men and women? A: Cave Creek Adventure Boot Camp is designed for women. However, due to the fact that the program is geared to meet the fitness goals of any individual, I would consider opening it up for men if my female campers felt comfortable with the idea of a co-ed camp, and if the demand were there. Jodi Norton, Cave Creek Adventure Boot Camp Weight Training Q: If trying to build lean muscle mass, how many repetitions and sets would you recommend that a beginner start with for each exercise? A: There are many different ways to reach individual goals. If someone is trying to build lean muscle mass and reduce body fat, great results will come from twelve to fifteen reps on each exercise. The last three reps should be quite tough, but can be completed without a spot. Each exercise should be performed in three sets, with the first set being a warm-up at a comfortable weight. It is important to really isolate the muscle group that you are working on. So, one workout should isolate the biceps and back, not the whole upper body. This will get results faster. Q: How much time per workout per session? A: If you are limited on time, it is about quality, not quantity. Form is crucial! It is more important to go slow and watch your breathing than to rush through each exercise so that you get all the machines in. An effective workout should take about thirty to sixty minutes of weights and thirty to sixty minutes of cardio. So, each session should take around an hour. Josh Rogers, SWEAT Circuit Training Q: What are the benefits of circuit training? A: The Curves system made the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002 as the fastest-growing franchise in the world. It is also the number-one fitness franchise in the world. I started here as a member before taking ownership, because I had to leave my forest-service career of almost twenty years due to collapse of my health at age 39. I so believe in the Curves program because it helped save my life, and I see it every day in here. Changes in body composition, metabolic rate, and fitness have been researched among women over a fourteen-week period. From depression and beyond, women achieve amazing changes within a short time. Curves is more than a fitness center—it is mind, body, and spirit. We are truly community! Q: Is this style of training suitable for the twenties, thirties, forties, and up? A: The circuit system is great for any age. My youngest member is 10, and my eldest is 84! We have women here for anything, from trying to increase bone density to weight loss to firming and toning to lower cholesterol, and on and on. Kim Grigsby, Curves The Beauty Side...
ColorQ: What are the new haircut and color trends for the summer? A: Natural colors: soft, not harsh on color, closer to natural color. Bangs prominent in front; layers, deep sweep, textured, Hollywood glam. Q: What styles are popular with teens, both boys and girls? A: For boys, faux hawks, which are longer down the center, textured, shattered point, messy, not spiked. For girls—edge cuts, layers, funky colors, choppy. Michelle Zeller, Dollyrockers Hair Maintenance Q: Which hair products are you recommending to clients to help combat the problem of chlorine-damaged hair? A: We recommend Redken UV Rescue. It is specially formulated to protect against harmful UV rays and sun and chlorine damage. We also have a Malibu 2000 treatment that gently lifts unwanted deposits in the hair, such as chlorine or hard water. Q: Are there any precautions swimmers can take prior to going into the pool to lessen sun and chlorine damage? A: There is a product called Blonde or Brunette Guard to put on damp hair before going into the pool, to fill the hair with conditioners instead of absorbing the chlorine. It also protects the cuticle by sealing it, which makes the hair stronger. Lisa Morton, Hedz Salon Hair Extensions Q: What is the latest and greatest in hair extensions? A: Latest: clip-ins for easy access, each clip is removable—ideal for adults, not children. Children’s clip-ins are available, but are a different type. Greatest: 100 percent human-hair clip-ins—beautiful and shiny. Q: Are extensions a high-maintenance investment in time for the client? A: Clip-ins are not high maintenance since they can be removed each night and reinserted each morning. Billie Rawak, Salon Picasso |
